Keshi Characteristics:

100% Nacre: This is their most defining characteristic. Since they form without a nucleus, Keshi pearls are solid nacre, which is the same lustrous substance that makes up the outer layers of a pearl. This composition often gives them an exceptionally high luster and orient (the iridescent, rainbow-like shimmer).

Irregular Shapes: As mentioned, their shapes are highly varied and organic, often referred to as "baroque." This makes each Keshi pearl truly one-of-a-kind.

Size: While the term "keshi" implies small, South Sea Keshi pearls can actually range from tiny (a few millimeters) to quite large (over 10mm, with rare instances of up to 18mm or more), particularly compared to Keshi from smaller oyster types like Akoya.

Color: South Sea Keshi pearls come in the same natural colors as their nucleated South Sea counterparts, primarily white, silver, champagne, and deep gold, reflecting the color of the Pinctada maxima oyster's "lips" (silver-lipped oysters produce white/silver pearls, gold-lipped oysters produce golden pearls).

Rarity: Historically, Keshi pearls were often considered a "bonus" or byproduct. However, with modern farming techniques, pearl farmers now frequently x-ray oysters to detect if the nucleus has been rejected. If it has, they often re-nucleate the oyster to encourage the formation of a regularly shaped cultured pearl. This practice has made South Sea Keshi pearls much rarer and more sought after than they once were, increasing their value.
